Contemporary dance is a genre of dance performance that developed during the mid-twentieth century. Since that, the contemporary dance style has grown to become one of the dominant genres for formally trained dancers throughout the world, especially in the U.S. and Europe. Contemporary dance is a style that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet.
Contemporary dance tends to combine the strong but controlled legwork of ballet with modern style. There is also floor work, fall and recovery, and improvisation characteristics of modern dance.
In contemporary dance, often you can see unpredictable changes in rhythm, speed, and direction. Additionally, contemporary dance sometimes incorporates elements of non-western dance cultures, such as elements from African dance, including bent knees, or movements from the Japanese dance style.
Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements that incorporate beauty and grace. Contemporary dance is something more, which is difficult to explain, but definitely, this kind of dance style doesn’t fit in one definition.
At Rhythm & Grace Dance Academy, when we think of contemporary dance style, we think of creative freedom, pushing boundaries, gravity, breathtaking imagery, intricate gestures, strength, art, heart.
We know dancing can be a scary thing, especially when you are on stage. But once your child takes those first steps, those steps will be as easy as a breath of fresh air. Even though the stage is scary, it is also the best way to know and express yourself through dance.
And dancing allows you to travel with people you love hanging out with and gives you opportunities to meet more awesome people or new friends.
If you want your child to feel freedom, express feelings and emotions, develop strength, and improve physical health, the contemporary dance style is the answer.
At Rhythm & Grace Dance Academy, we let students express his or her inner emotions to the audience. You can see your child on the stage, telling a story to the audience through the dance. The performance is so beautiful that it will make you cry and be proud of your child at the same time.
